What's the best blog host out there?

A frequently-asked query:

I want to host a new blog containing (translated) works that I’ve published in the media as a journalist, as well as derivative works from my reportages and interviews. I report mainly the arts and culture (including the music and indie movie scene), and my specialty is to write them in a lighthearted and entertaining way while enriching the reader’s knowledge and stimulating them to dig deeper into subjects that provide an intellectual challenge.

I want my blog to look rather serious, but not so serious that it becomes intimidating, and with some attractive artistic details that somehow make them stand out. I live in Southeast Asia and prefer something with a local flair (e.g. batik or wayang details) but something that Westerners actually find attractive and not too outlandish. Professional and simplistic, but with an exotic touch.

Which blog host should I go for? Blogger, WordPress, TypePad, Tumblr, LiveJournal, Xanga, or something else still?

Can you suggest some templates that might work out for this kind of blog? I’ve been looking at http://www.instantshift.com/2009/03/09/120-best-free-blogger-templates-around/ for a start, so if you think one of the templates there could work out please let me know which one and why. Otherwise, I’d be happy to find out about other offers of free templates that I could use in my blog.

Btw, if the download is for "Blogger" template, does it mean that I can’t use it on WordPress or others?

Thanks 🙂

A real webhost such as Zymic (which is a free one, and offers all the stuff that professional hosting does such as php, mysql, ftp), and then install a REAL WordPress installation (from WP.org) onto it. Beats the living hell out of wordpress.com or blogger any day, and it’s more customizable as well.

And yes, if the template is for a Blogger blog, of course it won’t run on WordPress. They are completely different platforms.

Your first requirement is to decide whether you want some other to own your data and domain forever or you like to own it for yourself ?
Best is to create your blog from your very own hosting account.
For serious and critical blog hosting many prefers hostguts.com as their blog host, you may also try hundreds of other but hostguts.com are perfect in what they do and also have pretty good reliability in terms of uptime, providing addon services (included for free in their managed wordpress hosting ) like wordpress upgrades, security fixes etc.
For theme i suggest you to check themeforest.net you can get a stunning theme which are not used by hundreds of other blogs and this will give your blog a more professional look.
You can get a great blog theme there at themeforest.net for $30 and an all purpose hosting at hostguts.com will cost you $3.9 per month. (some discount is there i think for yearly purchase)
so to calculate your yearly expense its
    $30(theme) + $40 (discount price) = $70 you will get a fully professional blog.
