Tips to Build Your Own Website

Question: I want to learn from scratch on how to build a website. I want to have a website with my own domain name. Any tips?

Answer: Here are the steps on creating a website from scratch and learning from it in the process.

1. Learn HTML – If you really want to learn to design a website, you should start by learning the basic syntax of XHTML. A good website to refer to is the W3schools. If you start by using a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSWYG) editor like Dreamweaver, you will not become a “real” web designer. You need to know HTML when you need to write scripts like PHP in the future.

2. Build your web pages – You can try building your pages while learning HTML in the previous step.

3. Get a Domain name – You can get a domain name from registrars like GoDaddy or Dotster.

4. Get a web hostingGet a web hosting that does not suck. There are many unreliable hosts out there. Make sure you get a good one and you don’t have to worry about downtime, bad customer support etc. and just focus on building your website.

5. Upload to hosting server – Now you can move the XHTML files to your web hosting server. Check your hyperlinks etc. Improve on it.

There is no better way to learn how to build website than by building it yourself today.
